Material choice and compliance are separate decisions. AS 1319 governs the colours, format, and symbols on the sign face - it does not mandate a substrate. You can produce a compliant "Mandatory: Hearing Protection" sign on corflute, ACM, vinyl, or metal. Pick the material for the location and life expectancy, then apply the standard format on top.

What Is AS 1319 and How Does It Affect Safety Sign Pricing?

AS 1319 is the Australian Standard for safety signs in the workplace. It sets the colour coding, layout format, and symbol conventions for the main sign categories, standardising what the sign looks like rather than what it is made from. Under the standard, the colour and format follow the message type:

Here is the method end to end. The job: a site induction and safety pack - 40 signs across 12 different artworks, mixing all four AS 1319 categories, all on 5mm corflute, single-sided, eyeleted for fixing. The mix:

The pricing question is the nesting. Thirty-six of the signs are 225x300mm, two are 300x450mm, and one is 600x900mm. Priced artwork-by-artwork, each of the 12 artworks would round up to its own part-used sheet and carry that waste alone. Nested together, the small 225x300 signs pack tightly and fill the gaps around the larger boards.

Now price the same pack artwork-by-artwork: material climbs to $210 (7 sheets), and pre-press balloons because 12 separate layouts each carry their own setup rather than sharing one pass. Add the same print, cutting, finishing and overhead and the total cost lands near $520, which at the same 55% margin quotes out around $1,155 - roughly $28.90 per sign.
