How much should you charge for vinyl decals?
Charge enough to cover material, machine and weeding time, and a margin, with a floor for tiny jobs. Here is what published price lists and trade threads show. All figures are US dollars and dated, so check them against your own costs.
| Source | What it prices | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| University print lab, FY2026 list | Printed vinyl, outdoor safe | US$6.50 a sq ft, US$13 minimum |
| Same list | Standard lamination | US$3.50 a sq ft, US$7 minimum |
| Same list | Vinyl stickers up to 2.5 x 2.5 in | US$0.40 each to 500, US$0.35 over 500, US$10 minimum |
| Same list | Vinyl stickers up to 4 x 4 in | US$0.75 each to 500, US$0.65 over 500 |
| University digital print studio | Cut vinyl decals | US$3.50 a sq ft plus weeding at US$8 per 15 minutes, billed on roll space used |
| Online sticker printers, 2026 price lists | 50 printed die-cut stickers, 3 x 3 in | US$15 to US$72 for the batch, about US$0.30 to US$1.44 a sticker |
| Sign trade forum, 2017 | Cut vinyl, two US towns 30 minutes apart | US$9 to US$17 a sq ft |
| Sign trade forum | Single-colour cut vinyl lettering, large job | US$6 to US$8 a sq ft |
University labs recover cost, they do not chase margin. Read their rates as a floor. A commercial sign business carries rent, staff and a sales cost, so trade rates sit higher. In metric, divide a rate per square metre by 10.76 to compare it per square foot.
How do you price vinyl decals?
Build the price from five lines, then apply your margin.
- Material by area, plus waste. In Australia, self-adhesive vinyl runs about A$3 to A$5 a square metre for monomeric, A$5 to A$8 for polymeric and A$12 to A$22 for cast. Add 8 to 15% for trim, run-out and reprints.
- Print and lamination. Ink is a small line. Lamination is not, because it is film plus careful labour.
- Cutting and weeding. Contour cutting is machine time. Weeding is people time, and on fine lettering it can take longer than the print.
- Setup. File check, nesting and loading the job. It is the same for 1 decal or 500.
- Minimum order. The floor that stops a 3 x 3 inch one-off from costing you money.
Then the margin. Custom stickers and decals carry about 60 to 70% gross margin in a well-run wide-format business, higher than banners.
A worked example from the trade: 100 decals at 6 x 12 inches in high-performance cast vinyl at US$1.00 a square foot, a material markup, five minutes each at a US$75 shop rate, and a US$100 art and setup charge. Total US$824.75, about US$8.25 a decal. Shop rates in that thread ran US$60 to US$100 an hour, with material marked up 160 to 200% or more.
Does lamination change the price of a decal?
Yes, on two lines. The film itself, which in Australia costs about A$2 to A$5 a square metre for standard gloss or matt and A$6 to A$12 for anti-slip floor or anti-graffiti film. And the labour to apply it without bubbles. Price lamination as its own option, so a customer who wants a short-term indoor decal is not paying for outdoor film.
How does cut type change the price?
Cut type decides the labour, so price each one separately.
- Cut vinyl lettering. Plotter time is small. Weeding is the cost, so time it.
- Print and contour cut. Machine time on the cutter, priced per sheet or run.
- Kiss cut on a sheet. Several decals share one sheet and one cut, so the price per decal drops fast.
- Die cut singles. Each piece is cut through. Many lists charge a per-design fee for the setup, US$5 a design on one university list.
How much should you charge for stickers?
Per piece, in runs: about US$0.35 to US$0.75 a sticker up to 4 x 4 inches on one published list, depending on size and quantity. The customer thinks in pieces, so show a price per piece and a total. Large decals and wall graphics suit area pricing. The method underneath is the same: area cost, plus the cut and setup share.
What minimum order should a decal business set?
Set a minimum that covers setup and a few minutes of weeding. One trade forum thread (2017) suggests about US$15 to US$25. University lists set US$10 to US$13. Whatever the figure, show it before checkout, not on the invoice.
How does SwiftSignQuote price a decal?
From the same five lines, worked out from real numbers on every quote instead of one rate per square foot.
- Material from the nest, not the rectangle. Each decal is nested on the real roll or sheet, contour and all, so the material line is what the job actually uses, plus the waste it actually makes. Our nesting uses a machine learning algorithm that nudges shapes inside each other to pack tighter. On fabricated lettering it used around a third less material on average than standard bin packing in our nesting benchmark.
- Machine time from the job. Print, laminate and cut time follow the size, the quantity and the cut type, at your machines' real rates.
- Labour where the labour is. Weeding, application tape, trimming and packing are costed per job, so fine lettering is not priced like a square sticker.
- Setup once per order. File checks and loading are spread across the run, so the price per piece falls as the quantity rises.
- Your rates and your margin. Every rate is your own shop's, calibrated with you before go-live.

How do you stop quoting decals by hand?
Decals are small, high-count, often repeat work. Across the sign and print business books we have analysed, jobs under A$2,000 were between 59% and 99% of invoices, and between 8% and 86% of revenue, depending on the book. Every hour spent pricing them by email is an hour away from the bigger jobs.
On a SwiftSignQuote store your customers choose size, quantity, material, lamination and cut type, watch the price move, upload artwork and pay by card or check out as a quote, on your own website. The price tables behind it are calibrated with you before go-live, and they are yours to own and adjust after it. We connect pricing of quote emails that ask "how much for 200 stickers?" to the same tables for you during onboarding. We serve customers in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, Germany and the US.
